President Emmanuel Macron of France was elected last year by a sweeping majority. However, his popularity has sharply declined since announcing his plans to raise taxes on matters such as gas and electricity. He proposed these tax raises because he feels they are necessary to combat climate change, but the middle and lower class feel that, in doing so, he has become a “president for the rich”. Middle class protesters, known as “yellow vests”, have taken to social media and gained quite a following. As of Tuesday, December 4th, four citizens have died in the multiple riots and protests that have taken place. Statistics show that the tax reform will be detrimental to the poorest and retired citizens, slightly beneficial to the middle class, and overwhelmingly beneficial to the richest - the top 1%. The yellow vests are consistently gaining support from the people of France in hopes of forcing the president and prime minister to repeal this proposition.

According to United States resources, Russia broke the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, which banned land-based nuclear missiles in Europe. The treaty banned ground-launched medium range missiles that go 500 - 5,500km (310-3,400 miles). Russia strongly denies this, but evidence shows that they did indeed break the treaty. NATO is “not planning more missiles in Europe” and and feel it is now up to Russia to keep the treaty intact.

The Border:

Thousands of people have walked thousands of miles to the Mexican/American border in Tijuana, Mexico with hopes of crossing into the United States. Along with those walking, a caravan arrived in late September and both Mexican and American guards were met with force at the border. It is said that people were throwing rocks and rushing both the American and Mexican guards trying to cross the border. The U.S. responded with tear gas in an effort to hold the mob back. A total of 69 people were arrested on the U.S. side and 39 on the Mexican side. President Trump tweeted:

“Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries. Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it anyway you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!”

in response to the event. However, these immigrants are simply seeking a better life and a better future for their children in the United States. It is clear that the President does not understand the severity of his words and is not budging on his promise to “build the wall” that began during his campaign three years ago.

Tech News:

Verizon recently announced that a 5G hotspot will be released in early 2019. 5G has the capacity to run much more quickly and efficiently than the current 4G, and could make major strides in real time data usage. Verizon will be distributing in the United States and other carriers will do so internationally. Verizon may also be joining with Samsung to create the first completely 5G smartphone - probably some version of the Galaxy S10. Verizon says that 5G will start fairly small, but grow rapidly in popularity and effectiveness globally.
